The relevance of virology at the moment is beyond doubt. Viruses are one of the main causative agents of many dangerous infectious and oncological diseases of humans, animals and plants.

Virologists diagnose viral infections of humans and animals, study their spread, and develop methods of prevention and treatment. The biggest achievement was the creation of vaccines against polio, smallpox, rabies, hepatitis B, measles, yellow fever, encephalitis, influenza, mumps, and rubella. A vaccine has been created against the papilloma virus, which is associated with the development of one of the types of cancer. Thanks to vaccination, smallpox has been completely eliminated.

Today, 86% of children in the world receive the most important, vital vaccinations, whereas in 1980 this figure was about 20%. These vaccinations protect them and the local population as a whole from a number of infectious diseases, including measles, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B and polio. Over the past three decades, the number of children paralyzed as a result of polio infection has decreased by 99.9% worldwide https://www.who.int/ru/news-room/feature-stories/detail/the-vaccines-success-story-gives-us-hope-for-the-future
